Place: Turin | Italy
Client: Torino Nuova Economia S.p.A.
Project: The project ranked first in the international concept contest launched by Torino Nuova Economia for the repurposing of the former FIAT Mirafiori industrial areas in Turin.
The project is of strategic importance for the city, as it aims at transforming the space of the former industrial facility (ca. 142,000 sqm) into a new pole of attraction and social interaction, with the repurposing of two existing buildings, the former DAI depot and the former Gommatura hangar, in addition to two open spaces. The project participates in the definition of the new “South Gate” access gateway to the city and is one of the ends of the new n. 2 Metro line. Its counterpart, at the other end of the line, is another strategic urban renewal project, V200.
The proposed design – the contest winner – includes a fluid landscape that hybridizes and reinterprets the existing rigid structural matrix, establishing a new relationship with the city and creating new spaces for temporary uses. The functional mix, chosen to ensure the operation’s economic sustainability, calls for a large covered mall for temporary and sports uses, an urban nursery abutting on a large theme garden, public vegetable patches and spaces for start-ups and creative initiatives related to the automotive sector.
